ROLL UP, ROLL UP FOR JAMES MARTIN STYLED BY RACHEL GOLD, GROOMED BY ALICE THEOBALD
Where do you find a red tailcoat and top hat for a chef who is one of the greatest showmen in the kitchen? Our ever resourceful stylist, Rachel Gold, tells us how she stepped up to this challenge for a recent glossy Sunday supplement shoot with celebrity chef, James Martin, who was only too happy to ham it up for the camera. Grooming by our celeb's favourite Hair and Makeup artist, Alice Theobald. High five Team JG...
Was it hot in the kitchen? Working with James Martin was memorable and exciting as he is a larger than life character, very friendly and down to earth. We were doing the Greatest Showman on Earth theme but it was not as easy as it looks - sourcing a red tailcoat proved to be rather a challenge. Having scoured the usual haunts including Angels, the Studio Costume, etc, I found the Holy Grail finally through a friend who has worked in theatre in the West End for 40 years.
James was amicable and willing to go along with the whole thing. He was hilarious when we asked him to wear a top hat with his chef's whites and use a carrot as a cigar.
We were shooting in a location house and the owner is an amateur chef. While we all looked on laughing and joking as James impaled a cooking knife into the wooden board for the picture (above), we heard the voice of the owner's husband in the background declare, 'Is that my knife? Oh and is that my block!'
Red faces all around. Missing prop department.
